Some untimely hits led to five Ray runs off of Tigers starter Drew Smyly. The young gun didn’t look bad, but ultimately fell in a 6-3 loss. Tampa scored their runs on just seven hits and one walk off Smyly in 5 and 1/3 innings.

Detroit looks to get plunked less tomorrow. Victor Martinez, who sat out the Oakland series, was drilled in his leg and (unrelated, however) later left the game:

“Martinez re-aggravated his sore right side swinging on a single, and said he will miss the final two games this weekend with the Tampa Bay Rays. Then, after the team is off Monday, Martinez said he hopes to play Tuesday when the Los Angeles Dodgers visit. ‘The way I feel right now, I don’t see it happening,’ Martinez said of playing against the Tampa Bay Rays after Friday night’s 6-3 loss. When asked if he was concerned about re-injuring the area that kept him out of three games earlier this week, Martinez said, “This is nothing major. I need time to get back,” (MSN.)

Then, Ian Kinsler was hit, prompting a warning for both benches. The Rays’ manager was ejected arguing the situation.

The Tigers loaded the bases with no outs in the 6th but could only muster one additional run. J.D. Martinez finished with a pair of hits, and Torii Hunter drove in two more.

The three bullpen rookies rolled through relief. In order, Chad Smith, Blaine Hardy, and Patrick McCoy worked over an inning each. Hardy is definitely emerging as some promising young help. We’re seeing more of the youth and less Al-Al lately…
