The Tigers answered a first inning RBI double by Boston’s Xander Bogarts with an RBI single from Andrew Romine, scoring Nick Castellanos from second for a 1-1 tie.

Detroit steadily took Boston’s starter down, scoring another run in the 4th on Victor Martinez’s sacrifice fly. The next inning, Ian Kinsler delivered a solo shot to left field for the game-winner.

With his son in the stands for his 19th birthday on Saturday, Torii Hunter followed Kinsler’s dong with one to right field, opposite style.

The Sox scored one more for two total runs. Drew Smyly pitched six innings, allowing one earned run, five hits, one walk, and four strikeouts on 101 pitches.

“Sir Clumselot” David Ortiz drilled catcher Alex Avila in the back of his head on a bad swing, forcing him out of the game. In a serious moment that Ortiz belittled, Ortiz held up some fingers like he was checking Avila’s vision. Dumbass. Avila had to leave; it was no laughing matter. Grow up, “war” boy.

The Tigers took revenge in the bottom part of the inning. Victor Martinez led off with a blast to the left field stands, upping the lead to 5-2. Backup catcher Bryan Holaday then stepped up and belted a triple to the right-center wall, scoring on a sacrifice fly.

Ian Krol and Joba Chamberlain held it down, respectively, in the 7th and 8th innings. Joe looked much calmer in the 9th, closing the door for the W.
