Oh, hey – just got back from 5/3 ballpark where in some 70-80° rain, I watched my hometown West Michigan Whitecaps walk-off their South Bend opponent 3-2 in the bottom of the 11th inning.

That may have been the most fun I’ve ever had in my life. It was 1-0 Bend, but we tied it up on a double steal. They led 2-1, but we responded that bottom half of the inning to tie it, too.

Rain started around the 7th inning stretch, but it had been hot all night. A state used to snow was surprisingly skittish, leaving myself, olsdchool, and all real fans alone for extra innings.

We had our chances in the bottom of the 9th, 10th, and 11th. The rain was clearly a factor – a South Bend outfielder simply fell down on the wet grass to allow a late-inning double. But we couldn’t capitalize on any of their mistakes, leaving a runner on third for the first two outs in the eleventh.

Finally, with the rain glowing in the stadium lights, West Michigan delivered a walk-off single up the middle to score our G on 3rd! I ran around high-fiving fans and hugging my dad, celebrating as the weather poured on.

That was a huge win, for the series continues tomorrow in a best-of-three. God bless Mr. Wells, my dad for always taking my brother and me to the game, and those ‘Caps for never giving up.

They don’t call us the champs for nothing, do they Cubs fans? Watch and learn – and we will keep loving that beautiful ballpark.
