The Edmonton Oilers, like their name suggests, are greasy.

After nearly ending Johan Franzen’s career with a deliberate shot to the face (resulting in a concussion that has since kept him sidelined), Detroit was on a mission to kick some ass tonight at Joe Louis Arena.

I slept through the first two periods. Apparently, they struck first for a 1-0 lead at the end of one. Fortunately, we scored two goals before I woke up.

Our goalie might have deserved some help on their conversion. Jimmy Howard was looking for the penalty on a sketchy goal. We responded in the second when Niklas Kronwall tied it up.

The Red Wings took the lead before the end of the period on a Riley Sheahan goal. The “Griffin” line killed it. Former Grand Rapids Gustav Nyquist did a nice job finding his teammate.

I saw most of the final period. By that point, it was a dominant display by the home team. Edmonton couldn’t cross center ice, getting aggressively pursued by Red Wing defenders. We killed two straight power plays in the final ten minutes.

Tomas Tatar ganked the puck near midice, then passed it ahead to Pavel Datsyuk. “The Magic Man” waved his wand again, making an exceptional pass to rookie Teemu Pulkkinnen. His shot is wicked hard, and he banged it home for a 3-1 lead!

It was such a huge goal in hindsight. Another gay penalty put our captain Hank in the box for accidentally deflecting the puck out of play. Upon pulling their goalie, the two man advantage resulted in an Oiler goal.

We strapped on our skates and kept up that pressure. Justin Abdelkader wasted little time sealing the win with an empty-netter! And just for good measure, we added another on a chippy night for the 5-2 finish!
