As a member of the East, Detroit made it’s first trip to “Original 6” member Toronto’s home ice.

The Wings led 3-1 early. Goalie Gustavsson made the game as hard as he could against his former team. Gusty made the save of the year and one of the best I’ve ever seen to keep the lead:

Insane. The game was tied 4-4 after three regulation periods, making the save pivotal to forcing OT. There the Wings finally lifted the shootout monkey off their backs, winning 5-4 behind Danny Alfredsson and Pavel Datsyuk.

“The Red Wings had lost 11 straight shootouts, six this season. Detroit coach Mike Babcock wasn’t too hung up on his team’s struggles in shootouts.

‘I think we’re a pretty even-keeled group,’ Babcock said. ‘We just keep on keeping on. We’re going to be fine here in the end. We’ve got to get players back, and then we’ll start playing with some speed and confidence and tempo and everything.’

The Red Wings were playing without injured captain Henrik Zetterberg (back), goalie Jimmy Howard (knee), center Stephen Weiss (sports hernia), and forwards Gustav Nyquist (groin),Johan Franzen (concussion) and Justin Abdelkader (concussion). They got defenseman Danny DeKeyser back after he missed 15 games with a shoulder injury” (Recap).
