INFIELD POP-UP: END OF INNING

That was the highlight of Scherzer’s incredible night. Actually, this was the highlight:

“Runners on first and second, one out; Max Scherzer steps up to the plate. First pitch, ’00’ flashes a bunt, but withdraws it and takes ball one.”

SMACK! SCHERZER hits a line drive to the left-center field wall, doubling in one run for the game’s initial score.

The Tigers knocked in the runner who Scherzer moved to third, too, for a 2-0 start.

Matt Harvey, Mets, gave up a career high 12 hits en route to the loss. The Tigers were screwed when Harvey was removed from the game with the bases loaded: Torii Hunter hit one too hard for the shortstop to handle, and his throw to second did not beat the Tigers’ runner. Nonetheless, he was called out to end the inning, saving Harvey from further damage.

The Tigers stayed on the Mets, scoring that snarfed run back in the 8th with a Don Kelly sacrifice fly. The team finished with 15 hits and only four strikeouts.

Jose Alvarez relieved Scherzer in the 7th, pitching into the 8th for one out. Jose Veras finished the inning.

Joaquin Benoit slammed the door in the ninth. Scherzer surrendered three hits and four walks; the bullpen did not allow either.

FINAL SCORE: 3-0 Tigers.
