RestGate? Why Stern??

According to the San Antonio Express-News, Popovich rested core players three times last season as a way to keep them rested and healthy. When asked about it at a Board of Governor’s meeting in April, deputy commissioner Adam Silver addressed the issue and indicated that the league would not discipline teams for these sorts of practices.

“The strategic resting of particular players on particular nights is within the discretion of the teams,” Silver said then. “And Gregg Popovich in particular is probably the last coach that I would second-guess.”

Stern fined the Lakers $25,000 in April of 1990 after coach Pat Riley rested Magic Johnson and James Worthy in a regular season finale against Portland. In 1985, then-vice president for NBA operations Rod Thorn fined the Lakers after Riley sat Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in a regular season finale.

via Gregg Popovich, Spurs won’t get away with resting stars.

  • Pistons Could Be Up 2-0… So, why aren’t we? Much like our Detroit Red Wings trailing two games, it’s pretty much now or never. And I know exactly how to fix it. Stan Van Gundy is failing (like he often did during the regular season) to reign in the passion and energy of the young Bad Boys 3.0, letting it [...]
  • Too Many Teams to Follow So, it’s not the Palestine-Israel conflict, but seeing my Tigers on opening day created a log-jam at centerfield with the Pistons on TNT at the same time. • Curry: Why Did We Let This Happen? Once upon a time, millions of years ago, we were allowed to play defense in the NBA. But sometimes (Drumpf, Bernie…) you become so numb to what’s trending, you think it’s actually normal behavior. Call it mob-mentality, “lemmings,” etc. It’s kind of scary to think for yourself. • Pistons Answer Biggest Test of Season In Chicago, the Detroit Pistons grinded out a tough victory between two teams fighting for their playoff lives. Maybe it was ugly for an outsider, but this was classic Bulls-Pistons basketball. It stayed within five either way pretty much non-stop. We trailed one after one, and led by one at halftime. It was a pretty [...]

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra was unconcerned, though.

“I have enough on my plate. I’m not a talking head,” Spoelstra told news reporters. “I had no idea what their mindset was. And I’m spending zero time trying to figure it out.”
