This proud moment is called giving Andy Van Slyke the finger on the play that haunts Pirate fans to this day: (Van Slyke’s recount) Not so with Andy Van Slyke, who appears on MLB’s 20 Greatest Games on MLB Network (Sunday, 7 p.m. ET) to recount playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates against the Atlanta Braves in Game 7 of the 1992 National League Championship Series.

Van Slyke, playing center field, recalls asking Pirates teammate Barry Bonds to move in on the Braves’ Francisco Cabrera, who was at-bat in the ninth inning.

Bonds demurred. Or as Van Slyke recalls, “He turned and looked at me and gave me the international peace sign. So I said, ‘Fine, you play where you want.’ ”

Cabrera’s hit then dropped in front of Bonds, who then barely missed throwing out the game-winning and series-ending run at the plate.
